When you smoke weed out of a joint, you don’t have to take care about any maintenance. The paper slowly burns down to ashes and that’s it. However, when you do it out of a bong or a bowl, or you’re just a big fan of dabbing cannabis concentrates, it goes without saying that you won’t use papers for the process. Unless, of course, you like to waste your stash.
Having a bong, glass pipe or a dab rig entails dealing with some responsibilities, among which maintenance is hands down the most important. If you love smoking Mary Jane, you’re not going to allow yourself to inhale harmful carcinogens contained in the resin after your last smoking session. On top of that, burnt remains produce bad smell, and you don’t want cannabis to evoke any unpleasant feelings, do you?
With that said, I’m going to show you how to clean your dab rig, bong, or pipe in order to maintain your smoking machines in a pristine condition. Before we move on to specific ‘dishes’, I’d like you to familiarize yourself on general principles behind cleaning glass stuff.
Cleaning Glass Equipment: Do’s and Don’ts
Most bongs, pipes, and dab rigs are made of glass. Although many bongs comes with 5 to 7-mm thick glass, the material itself is still fragile and prone to erosion. Thus, keep in mind that it’s of utmost importance to clean your stuff on a daily basis, and if you’re not that keen on cleaning, do it at least once a week.
Furthermore, keep all pieces dry. While this will be of no concern in terms of using pipes or dab rigs, paraphernalia that use water are more vulnerable to formations of pests and can grow molds when exposed to excessive moisture for days.
As for the don’ts, remember not to use any harsh substances when cleaning your smoking equipment. Some chemicals are toxic and can actually damage your bong, let alone health and safety aspects.
Last but not least, don’t get misguided by ads on TV and Internet, as some companies will do everything to make you purchase their products. When it comes to cleaning your dab rigs, bongs, and pipes, a simple and cheap cleaner or a homemade mixture of vinegar and salt will be perfect for the job.

First things first, you must clean the nail. While it’s the easiest part of the rig to clean, the nail can be difficult to remove as the glass from your rig may interact with the nail, resulting in a formation of a tight seal.
As for the entire process, you need to lightly heat your ring so that any offending resin is liquefied and once you’ve done it, proceed by wiping the nail with a cotton cloth. When dealing with a titanium nail, place it on a heat-resistant surface and keep heating it until it reaches glowing red.
Do this task thoroughly and carefully drag the cotton swab through the underside where the nail gets into contact with the rig. Above all, don’t use bare hands while heating the nail – it can really hurt.
Now, for the rig part, it’s best to use either Acetone or Isopropyl Alcohol as your solvents. As for the Acetone, it’s also known as ‘nail polish remover’ and provides users with almost instantaneous effects – this is why chemists use it to clean their glassware in laboratories.
Isopropyl alcohol is also a great solvent, and actually quite safe one (unless you drink it).
Pour the solvent in your rig, shake violently and wait for the effects. When dealing with so-called trouble areas, you can use a soaked cotton swab to reach them and get rid of all offensive remains.
To wrap it up, Isopropyl Alcohol will do great during regular cleaning; on the other hand, if you were particularly neglectful, acetone will come in handy to battle the persistent resin.
How to Clean A Pipe?
Pipes are not demanding in terms of maintenance. Still, they require some attention and a couple of smart moves won’t cost you a crown. To begin with, get rid of any loose residue from your pipe. After that, hold it upside down and tap the end from the back with your finger to force any remaining particles to fall from your pipe. As with dab rigs, a needle or a dedicated pipe cleaner will do wonders for difficult places. In fact, you may go with even simpler solutions, such as a cotton swab or pencil.
Once you’re through the initial part, grab a zip-lock bag, open it, and fill it with rubbing alcohol – again, Isopropyl Alcohol is going to do just fine. It will destroy any tar and resin, not to mention that it will eventually remove stains from your pipe over time. To increase the level of abrasiveness, add one tablespoon of salt to the bag. Now, zip it and shake the pipe to enable salt to run through it. Shake no longer than 2 minutes; this will be enough to make your pipe apparently clean.
For the final part, soak the pipe in hot water for a couple of hours and rinse it afterwards. Voilla!

Since bongs are more complex than pipes and dab rigs, it takes more time to clean them. Start by disassembling the bong. Then, rinse it with hot water and add something abrasive to the bong, e.g. salt or rice. Use such amounts that will make it as abrasive as possible, but above all, use it enough so that it doesn’t dissolve in the alcohol
Shake the bong repeatedly with some vigor – it should take up to 5 minutes. When shaking the item, remember to block up the holes with your fingers so that neither alcohol nor salt escapes the bowl. Repeat the process with other components of your bong.
Regardless of how much you neglected your smoking dish, it’s still possible to save it – you’ll just have to repeat the process once or twice (or even more if you were particularly neglectful). Fortunately, there’s a way to make cleaning your bong nothing but pleasant. Just clean it regularly and it will pay you off with clear and smooth hits.
That would be enough theory for today – now go and clean your stuff before it gets too messy!
